Cost of Kitchen Cabinets - Estimates and Prices Paid

  Typical costs:
  • Stock cabinets come pre-made in specific styles, shapes and finishes. A lot depends on the size and shape of your kitchen and the total linear feet of cabinets needed. Basic cabinets (top and bottom) for a 10x12-foot kitchen start at $4,000-$5,000 and up, not including installation and countertops.
  • Semi-custom cabinets let you choose from among a number of options, because they're built after you place your order. They're about double the cost of stock; a 10x12 kitchen begins at $8,000-$10,000 with costs rising for glass fronts, hand-crafted finishes, exotic woods, intricate trim patterns or other options.
  • Cabinets custom-made in a particular design or to fit in a specific layout can cost as much as four times stock prices, or $16,000-$20,000 and up, uninstalled and without countertops.
  • IKEA.com[1] 's free downloadable kitchen planner lets you plug in the size and shape of your kitchen and details such as door, window and electrical outlet locations, then choose and place various IKEA cabinets. The planner automatically calculates the total materials costs.

What should be included:
  • Quality cabinets are built like good furniture; ThisOldHouse.com[2] shows the inner construction, so you know what to look for.
  • NaturalHandyman.com[3] presents step-by-step instructions for installing ready-made cabinets. Even if you're not doing it yourself, this lets you know what to expect during an installation.
Additional costs:
  • New kitchen countertops on lower cabinets may add to the bottom line.
Shopping for kitchen cabinets:
  • Collect photos of appealing cabinets. BettersHomesandGardens.com provides online slide shows.
  • Scrapbook.com[4] presents handy diagrams of typical kitchen layouts, plus links to manufacturer and retail sites ranging from discount offerings to custom cupboards.
  • The National Association of the Remodeling Industry[5] gives contractor referrals.
  • Ask about previous projects, licensing and insurance; check references and the Better Business Bureau[6] . A written contract should specify materials, labor, scheduling and any payment plan. Make a minimum deposit and pay when the job is completed.

I'm unable to afford the total remodel I'd love to have in my 40+ year old kitchen so I've had to settle for just sprucing it up with paint. I painted the cabinets boxes white and the doors soft blue. Then I thought they needed a little flare so I used auto pin-stripping and made 3 line borders around the doors. The Formica counter-tops were that HORRIBLE avocado green so I used a counter-top paint in off white. It's EASY to apply and really works well. (Just be sure to go over it only once until it's totally dry) It's not what I dream of but it's certainly better than it was!

Bought foreclosure that I had to gut. Spent weeks shopping cabinets at Lowes, HD, RTA, and a few established shops. Wanted a simple kitchen that would be user friendly cause I cook a lot. Prices quoted at Lowes and HD ranged from 7k-12k, and I wanted no drawers or doors(other than under apron sink). Custom shops ranged from 9k-20k. Shopped the RTA's and they ranged from 3k-8k. Met my new neighbor and found out he built custom cabinets. Figured it would be 30k+ since I live in a remote resort community were you pretty much live in a trailer or a mil+ home. He came back with a price including granite tops from the stove around sink to fridge, 36"x60" high end usuable butcher block with 2 drawers and movable shelves, everything designed exactly how i wanted with no charge for instalation. Drove me from NC to Ga to pick granite on his gas. He will travel. My sister likes my kitchen more than my parents 40k ones. Did such a good job he built me 2 custom bathroom vanities that rock!

Glass tile backsplash--$1600. $500 for tile and $1100 for labor and supplies. About 30 sq ft of tile.
New faucet--$230 Price Pfister via Amazon (cheapest price I found)
New sink--$250 for Kohler 2 basin 18 gauge stainless steel via Amazon
Plumber--$525 for install of 3 faucets, sink, a showerhead and virgin dishwashwer install (due to brand new cabinets).

I wanted a target cost before I let my vision go too far. Do I paint the counter-tops and existing cabinets, replace one cabinet for a pantry right now until I can afford an entire kitchen? I had to begin someowhere so I found this quite helpful. I read the comments and I do understand this doesn't include specialty finishes, countertops and hardware including faucets and disposals. I just needed an idea of what it would cost for me. Thank you. This is very helpful. Now I know I've got a long way to go before I can redo my entire kitchen.

new Granite Countertop (Tan Brown)= $5000
new Tile for backsplash including grout = $800
New Appliances (DW, Microwave, Fridge, wall oven, Cooktop= $5000
New Undermount sink, and disposal = $500

I'm a contractor in SD and can tell you that the price you're being quoted is halfway what an entire kitchen remodel might cost you new, especially considering that your kitchen is smaller than usual (10x10 norm). Bids and estimates are unique to each client and without specifics on your posting, it's hard to say if the quote is fair.
Items such as relocated plumbing, new gfci outlets, new energy efficient lighting, and mechanical work (hood or other venting requirements) can add significant cost to your remodel. Having said that, you might want to ask for the cost of new cabinets instead of resurfaced. These days, the cost of labor is significant, especially if the gc is following state and federal employer requirements like worker's comp, liability insurance, and payroll taxes. Depending on what's involved in "resurfacing" (sanding & repainting/staining? or simply replacing the doors with some cosmetic work to the cabinet boxes). The countertop price is also a price that can fluctuate wildly based on the slab material (corian, granite, butcherblock, etc.), its size and finish, and configuration.
Generally, it's hard to say with little information how much things cost, but sites like these best help by giving consumers a RANGE. For best results, do it the old way...get three bids from reputable contractors and check their references.
Good luck.
