Kitchen Cabinet Sizes - Kitchen Design Ideas to transform

Kitchen cabinet sizes are the puzzle pieces you'll need to design a kitchen. Cabinets generally come in width and height increments of 3.

Not all widths and heights are available in every style or manufacturer.

Of course you can always have cabinets custom built to any size, but here are standard kitchen cabinet sizes most manufacturers carry that you can easily work with in your design.

WALL CABINETS:

  • Depth: 12" (can be 24" deep for over the fridge)
  • Width: 12", 15", 18", 21", 24", 27", 30", 36", 42"
  • Height: 12", 15", 18", 24", 30" 36", 42"

BASE CABINETS:

  • Depth: 24"
  • Width: 9", 12", 15", 18", 21", 24", 27", 30", 33", 36", 39", 42", 48", 60"
  • Height: 34-1/2" (finished height with countertop 36")

SINK BASES:

  • Depth: 24"
  • Width: 18", 21", 24" - bar sinks. 30", 33", 36", 42", 48" - full-size sinks. Apron or Farmhouse Sink base: 33", 36", 42". Diagonal sink base (SEE MORE INFO BELOW) - 36", 42".
  • Height: 34-1/2"
  • Sink base fronts only (with unattached floors and toekicks) are available in widths from 24" to 48".

CORNER CABINETS:

Corner kitchen cabinets are a different beast. There's the diagonal wall or base cab, the blind corner base (the one you have to reach waaaay in I dont recommend these...even the ones with swing-out gizmos). Also the square corner wall or base...the door looks like two doors on both sides of a corner and opens out bi-fold style.

Diagonal and square corner cabs are usually available with a Lazy Susan for ease of access.

How to draw kitchen corner cabinets:

  • Square corner wall depth: 12" Measure from the corner 24" from both directions.
  • Square corner base depth: 24" For a 36" corner cab, measure 36" both directions from the corner.

Typical kitchen cabinet sizes for diagonal or square corner wall cabs:

  • Width: 24"
  • Height: 30", 36", 42"

Corner base kitchen cabinet sizes:

  • Width: 33", 36"
  • Height: 34-1/2"

Kitchen cabinet sizes for diagonal sink bases for a corner sink location are usually 36" or 42"...use the 42" if you'll be installing a double bowl sink.

TO DRAW: Measure 42" out on both walls that extend from the corner.

You can get just the cabinet front, if you like. This usually comes with an unattached "floor" and toekick you add during installation. Corner fronts come in diagonal or square corners.

TALL CABINETS:

These are usually pantries (12" or 24" deep), or wall oven cabinets (24" deep). Height choices are 84", 90" or 96".

RANGE BASE (cooktop) CABINETS:

  • Depth: 24"
  • Width: 30", 36"
  • Height: 34-1/2"

You can actually use any base cabinet 30" or 36" wide for a cooktop. Just know you won't be able to use the top drawers.

ISLAND CABINETS:

Cabinet manufacturers make islands in several kitchen cabinet sizes (24", 36", 48" widths), but they're not your only option.

  • Islands don't have to match other cabs. The island in your kitchen can be an accent, a focal point, something old made new, a cool design from your favorite online catalog store, the absolute pinnacle of your kitchen design!
  • An island can be a peninsula cabinet...or several together. These cabs open from both sides. Standard widths are 15", 18", 24", 27", 30", 33", 36".
  • Islands can be created from base cabinets of any width and configuration. Add back and side panels to any base cabs, pop on a countertop, and voila!
  • For a cooktop in an island, see Range Base Cabinets. The most common kitchen cabinet size is 30" wide (the width of most cooktops). Again, add back and end panels.
  • For a sink in an island, any sink base will do.
  • You can add a raised eating bar (about 6" higher, 12" deep) - add brackets or corbels to support the bar.
  • Or create an overhang (15" deep) of countertop for seating (24" high stool). I suggest support legs for this depth...turned ones that match the cabinetry would look great.
  • If you don't have room for an eating bar, consider a raised serving bar about 8" deep. This works as a visual barrier to separate the kitchen from an adjoining room, or just to hide the messiness of cooking.
  • Islands can also be fashioned from wall cabinets. You'll need to add a 3-1/2" toe kick for working comfort and to raise the cabs off the floor so you can open the doors. For a tall island, use 36" high wall cabinets (finished size with toe kick and countertop 41"). Or go as low as 27" (finished size 32"), a nice height for chopping and rolling dough.CAUTION: THESE NEED STABILITY! And usually more depth! Wall cabinets are only 12" deep, so you may want to set them up back to back for good countertop depth and stability...or add an overhang eating area with legs for support.

How to read the code:

Cabinet manufacturers use these codes for kitchen cabinet sizes and styles. I recommend learning them so you can mark each cabinet this way in your design. Makes it easier to understand at a glance.

W H D

Width Height - Depth

A wall cabinet 24" wide and 36" high is a W2436 (the depth of 12" is standard).

A base cabinet 12" wide with one drawer and one door is a B12 (the depth of 24" and height 34-1/2" are standard). If you have a choice of door opening direction, the code reads B12 L or R.

A 12" drawer base (all drawers) is a DB12.

A 36" sink base is SB36.

Square corner cabs are SCW (wall) or SCB (base).

Diagonal Corners are DCW or DCB (sometimes DW or DB). DCW2430 is a diagonal wall cabinet 24" wide (from the right or left outer edge to the back corner) and 30" high.

For over-the-fridge cabinets, put the depth first: 24W3615 is 24" D, 36" W, 15" H.
