Whether you're building whole cabinets from scratch or just refacing your cabinets and drawers, the building materials you use to make your kitchen cabinets can affect both the look and durability of your finished project. You can create kitchen cabinets to fit in a variety of larger designs, but when it comes down to it, you're creating boxes.
Sheet Material
Before you begin your project, you'll need sheet material to create your basic cabinets, doors and drawers. You can use a wide range of different materials to make your cabinets, including high-quality wood sheets or plywood. One of the most common cabinet-building materials, plywood used for building cabinets should have two good-quality surfaces on each board. You can use a less-expensive product, like fiberboard or pressboard to make your cabinets, but you'd have to cover the surface with a veneer once you created the cabinets. Fiberboard is also not as durable as wood and could react poorly if dinged or moistened.
Glue
Depending on the builder, a specialty glue, like wood glue, is often used during cabinet construction. Slim beads of glue are placed at spots where the cabinet comes together, such as cabinet or drawer corners. In some cases, glue is also applied when inserting shelves, adding a cabinet bottom, or joining other detail pieces, like adding molding to the front of a cabinet after the basic cabinet is completed.
Nails
To create a cabinet that will last for years to come, small nails are typically used, sometimes in conjunction with glue, to hold the cabinet together. Nails are frequently placed along the corners and back to keep the cabinet together. If you're creating your own cabinets, nail the nail just a touch into the wood and cover the nail hole over with wood filler to give your cabinet a smooth finish along the sides.
Hardware
Once you've completed your cabinets from top to bottom, add hardware to create detail and increase efficiency. Kitchen cabinet hardware includes items like drawer pulls and handles, which are used to open the cabinet. Each type of hardware comes in a variety of styles, which you typically order to match. You can pick up kitchen cabinet hardware at a variety of retailers, including department, discount and home improvement stores.
Countertop
Once you install your cabinets in the spot you want them, add a countertop. Countertops come in a wide variety of materials, including laminate, linoleum and natural stone. The price for a countertop varies based on material. You can have your countertop pre-cut and delivered or cut it yourself for a bit of savings. Many cabinets are also available in standard lengths and sizes for easier installation. You can purchase a countertop from most building or home-improvement stores.
