Refinishing your cabinets with cream paint and glaze can instantly update your kitchen's look.

Outdated, unattractive cabinets can give your entire kitchen a drab, unappealing look. Fortunately, you can improve their appearance - and the entire room's - with just a little paint. To brighten up your kitchen and add a little old-fashioned charm, refinishing your cabinets with cream paint and glaze is an ideal, budget-friendly option. The cream color gives the room a brighter look, while the glaze tints the cabinets slightly to provide a subtle, antique feel. Best of all, it's an easy, do-it-yourself project once you familiarize yourself with the steps.

Prep Cabinets

Before you refinish your cabinets with cream paint and glaze, you must prepare them properly. Start by removing the cabinet doors, drawers and hardware. In a kitchen, cabinets usually have smoke, oil and other residue on their surface that may not be visible to the eye, so you must thoroughly clean them with a degreasing cleanser. Follow up with a deglosser, which will remove any lingering greasy residue. Once the cabinets are clean and dry, use 100- to 220-grit sandpaper to sand the surface so the cabinets will accept the paint more easily. For the best results, apply a primer before painting. If your cabinets are made from a tight-grained wood like cherry or maple, an oil-based primer works best. However, for cabinets made with an open-grained wood like ash, oak, hickory or mahogany, a brushing putty is a better option because its thick consistency allows it to fill the grain and prime the wood at the same time.

Paint

When it comes to choosing paint for your cabinet refinishing, finding the right cream color may be your first priority, but using the right formula is just as important. In a kitchen, an oil-based formula is your best bet because it dries to a harder finish than water-based paint, so it's more durable and easier to clean. For the most attractive antique glaze finish, choose a cream paint shade that leans more toward white than yellow. You can use a foam roller to apply paint to the larger surface areas of the cabinets, but use a brush for inside edges and any small crevices that the roller can't reach. When it comes to painting the doors, you can only do one side at a time because the paint must dry for at least 24 hours on each side. Painting the back of cabinet doors does give them a more polished look, but it is an option step.

Glaze

Before applying glaze, make sure that the cream base coat is completely dry, which typically takes 24 hours. While you can mix your own glaze, it's usually easier to use a pre-mixed glazing product from your paint supply store. Glaze comes in a variety of colors, so choose an option that complements the rest of your kitchen's decor. For cabinets, opt for an oil-based glaze product because you'll have more time to work since it takes longer to dry than a water-based formula. You can use a brush or clean rag for your initial glaze application, but work in a either a circular or straight motion as you apply it. Once you coat the cabinets with glaze, take a clean rag and use it to wipe off the glaze so the cabinets are only lightly tinted. It may help to start on the back of your cabinet doors, so if you make a mistake as you perfect your glazing technique, it won't be as obvious. Glaze the doors first before moving on to the drawers. Leave the cabinet bases for last. If you do the back of the cabinet doors, you'll have to wait for them to dry fully before moving on to the cabinet fronts.

Finish

Adding a clear topcoat to your glazed cabinets is not necessary, but it can help the finish last longer and prevent scratches and other damage. Allow the glaze to dry completely before applying a urethane product to finish the cabinets. Use a brush to apply the topcoat; read the urethane's instructions carefully so you know how long it takes for the product to cure. Allow the cabinets to dry as directed before rehanging the doors, replacing drawers and getting your cabinets back in order.
