Episode Summary
Penny Wong shows her human side: Famously guarded Finance Minister Penny Wong opened up about race, sexuality and her family on ABC's Kitchen Cabinet.
Wong cooked a spicy Malaysian fish dish -- a recipe handed to her by her late brother Toby -- for host Annabel Crabb, who cleverly uses food as a vehicle to humanise her interview subjects.
During their pow wow, Wong discussed being bullied as an Adelaide schoolgirl, her ironic reason for becoming involved in student politics (opposition to Labor's HECS scheme), her unsuccessful attempt to save the world with Kevin Rudd at Copenhagen, the recent birth of a daughter with partner Sophie Allouache, her quest to preserve her own privacy despite having a private life that might as well, given current political circumstances, have neon lights all over it. Penny Wong
Penny Ying Yen Wong was born in 1968 in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. She spent the first eight years of her life in Malaysia, before settling in Adelaide in 1977.
Penny studied Arts/Law (Hons) at the University of Adelaide where she also immersed herself in the world of student politics. She aligned herself with various environmental groups and left-wing groups before successfully taking over the University of Adelaide Labor Club.
During university Wong started to work part time for the CFMEU, in 1992 went on to work for the CFMEU on a full time basis as an industrial officer. In 1995 she became a policy advisor in the newly elected NSW Labor government led by Bob Carr, working for the Minister for Land and Conservation.
From 1996 she returned to Adelaide to become a lawyer, then worked as the legal officer for the Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union before being elected to the federal senate in 2001. From 2004 Penny was a shadow minister in the federal parliament and when Labor came to power in 2007 she was appointed Minister for Climate Change and Water, then Minister for Climate Change, Energy Efficiency and Water. In 2010 Penny Wong became the Minister for Finance and Deregulation.
