Cornice or crown molding adds a nice decorative detail to the top of kitchen cabinets. Choose moldings that compliment your existing woodwork and don't overpower the cabinets. For painted cabinets you can use polystyrene molding to save a little money. They typically come in white and are primed and ready to use. They can be cut and installed using the same techniques as traditional wood moldings. Whatever your choice of molding, the key to getting it cut correctly is making sure your pieces are the correct length and have the right miters cut on them.

Things You'll Need

  • Crown molding

  • Tape measure

  • Carpenter's square

  • Miter saw

    • 1

Measure, cut and install each piece as you go to avoid confusion. It is easiest to mark the moldings while they are in place on the cabinets. Start at the right end of your cabinets. The first piece is probably a return or ends at the wall. Either way, it will have a flat, or 90 degree, end where it begins. If your first run ends at an outside corner, place a piece of molding butted up to this spot, overlapping the open end, and mark the back of the molding where it meets the face of the cabinet. If it is an inside corner, measure the face with a tape measure, and mark the length on the molding along the bottom edge.

    • 2

Transfer this mark with a square to the face of the molding. This mark should be on the left end of your molding. All outside miters will be cut away from the piece you are keeping, long top edge to the left in our example, and all inside miters toward the short top edge, angled to the right in our example. Make a note of which way this one goes.

    • 3

Place the molding on the saw against the fence in relation to the fence as it will be to the wall. The flat top edge on the back should be squarely against the fence, the flat bottom edge against the base of the saw.

    • 4

Determine the angle to be cut. If it is a square corner, you'll need two 45-degree angles, one left -- your first cut in the example -- and one right, to make a 90-degree joint. If you are running to a corner cabinet that sits on an angle, it is probably 45-degrees, requiring two 22.5-degree angles. For odd angles you will need a 360-degree adjustable protractor. You can purchase this at your local home center.

    • 5

Set the saw to the correct angle and lock it down. Set the molding to meet the saw blade with the side of the blade toward the piece your are keeping on the outside of your mark.

    • 6

With the molding held securely against the fence, start the the saw. Allow it to reach full speed before beginning the cut. For best results, cut your cabinet molding in one smooth, fluid motion, without forcing or rushing. Make sure to release the trigger and allow the blade to stop spinning before moving the molding or making any adjustments.

    • 7

Repeat the procedure with each piece. If you are unsure, cut molding a little long and trim it to fit.
