When your kitchen cabinet doors close improperly or don't line up with each other, it is often necessary to adjust the hinges. Kitchen cabinets use either a European-style hinge or a standard hinge. European or salice hinges look like a small square stem that fits from the cabinet to a cup in the back of the cabinet door. Standard hinges simply fit onto the edge of the cabinet and the cabinet door. Most newer cabinets use the European style because there is more adjustment to the hinge over the standard kitchen cabinet door hinge. If hinge adjustment does not resolve the issue, it may be necessary to replace the hinges.

    • 1

Search for the depth and side screws, if your cabinet doors have European hinges. The depth screw is the screw on the end of the hinge bar pointing to the back of the cabinet, and the side screw is on the hinge bar toward the front of the cabinet. The mounting screws are above and below the hinge bar.

    • 2

Loosen the depth screw one full turn with a Phillips-head screwdriver, if the cabinet door does not sit flush across the cabinet. Push the door in or out as necessary, and tighten the screw.

    • 3

Turn the side screw counterclockwise one full turn with the Phillips-head screwdriver, if the door is crooked to the other adjacent doors. Move the door as necessary to line up with the adjacent doors and tighten the screw.

    • 4

Loosen the two mounting screws if the door seem low or high to the adjacent doors. Adjust the door as necessary and tighten the screws.

    • 5

Twist the mounting screws counterclockwise on standard hinges one full turn. Maneuver the door as necessary. Retighten the mounting screws. There is not much adjustment available with this type of hinge.
