Golden oak cabinets, most often associated with kitchens from the 1980s, are considered by many to be unfashionable and in need of updating. The popularity of stainless steel appliances over the last decade has turned white appliances into white elephants. But oak is slowing staging a comeback in todays kitchens, and inspired by European designs, white appliances are enjoying resurgence. Whether your kitchen is a throwback or brand new, decorating with oak cabinets and white appliances is easier than you think.

Kick up the space by adding colors that allow the cabinets to pop. Paint the walls olive green or latte brown. Add a white subway tile backsplash for contrast and to coordinate with the white appliances. Make a bold statement with countertops in shades of red or green.

Add accessories. Choose small appliances like crock pots and toasters in a color that contrasts with the large white appliance or opt to match all appliances for a sleek, contemporary look. Give the kitchen a touch of class with a painting hung on the wall above the table that pulls all the kitchens colors together including brown and white.

Switch out the hardware. Remove dated pulls and handles in favor of white porcelain ones to give the cabinets a more modern look while complementing the white appliances.

Have fun with magnets and artwork. Shop around for interesting and colorful magnets. Opt for some with a similar theme, such as animals or sports. Use them to display your childrens artwork, a collection of vintage postcards or simply to stylishly hold shopping lists and memos in place on your white fridge.

Lay an oak hardwood floor. Stain it the same color as your cabinets. It will ground the space while allowing the appliances to stand out. The oak floor coupled with matching cabinets draws the eye from floor to ceiling, making the space appear larger than it is. This is especially effective in small and galley kitchens.

Take advantage of the space above your cabinets if they dont reach the ceiling. Display collections of brown and white pottery to pick up the cabinets brown tones. Store items not often used in colorful baskets that pop against the brown cabinets.
