A well-designed kitchen orients the cabinets and appliance openings so everything is easy to access.
Standard cabinet sizes have evolved for functionality and safety. Kitchen cabinets have three types of components: overhead cabinets, base cabinets, and pantry cabinets. Sizes may vary in terms of width, but there are standards for heights and depths that ensure your cabinets will be functional and their contents accessible for everyone.
Above Your Head
Overhead cabinet width can vary from one manufacturer to another, but depth and height are standardized to accommodate average height of homeowners and the size of most appliances. Overhead cabinets are typically between 12 and 13 inches deep, except for microwave cabinets, which are 15 to 18 inches deep to accommodate most standard microwave sizes. The cabinets placed above a fridge are also slightly deeper, typically measuring 24 inches deep. The standard height of an overhead cabinet is 30 inches, but 36-inch or 42-inch tall cabinets are available to allow you to extend the cabinets to the ceiling to maximize storage space. Upper cabinet widths are sized in 3-inch increments from 9 to 48 inches.
Along the Bottom
Base cabinet widths also range from 9 to 48 inches, just like overhead cabinets, but the standard height of a base cabinet is 34 1/2 inches. This ensures that a standard counter top of 1 1/2 inches thick brings the work surface up to 36 inches. Most people can stand at a counter of this height and work comfortably without slouching over. The standard depth for base cabinets is 24 inches, which ensures you can recess the sink or a cooktop within the cabinetry. Stoves and dishwashers are typically sized according these standard measurements as well. If you install a kitchen island, the standard sizing is the same as base cabinet standard measurements.
Pantry Cabinets
Pantry cabinets are tall, typically extending from the floor to the ceiling, and are used to store dry goods, canned food and grains. The standard depth of pantry cabinets is 24 inches, which allows for recessing of the oven or microwave next to the pantry so that the facing of the appliances is flush to the cabinet doors.
Factoring In Appliances
There are a few standard size guides for most major kitchen appliances. For example, most dishwashers are 24 inches wide, so the base cabinets in the sink area, where most dishwashers are installed, must be large enough to install a 24-inch single-bowl sink or a 36-inch double-bowl sink, while allowing enough space next to the cabinets to accommodate the dishwasher. Refrigerators and cooktops range in size from 30 to 36 inches, but a built-in oven needs a 33-inch-wide space in a pantry cabinet unit. Appliances dont always meet standard sizing, so decide on the appliances you want in your kitchen before you begin planning your cabinetry. This ensures that you know the exact height, width and depth your openings should be.
Clearance for Safety
As you plan the sizing of upper cabinets, allow 30 inches of space between the bottom of the cabinet and the cooktop of an electric stove. Gas stoves require a 36-inch clearance. The bottom of your overhead cabinet with the range hood installed should be 66 to 72 inches from the floor. These clearances ensure safe and efficient operation of your cooktop. Typically, the bottom of the remaining upper cabinets should be 18 inches above your counter top for the use of small appliances.
