When you are looking at installing a full kitchen, you face the choice of two major kitchen cabinet systems: AKURUM or VÄRDE.
1. AKURUM
Of the two, AKURUM is the most popular and it most closely approximates traditional built-in kitchens offered by other cabinet manufacturers. A "built-in kitchen" visually means that you're looking at clean, unbroken horizontals and legs covered up by toekicks.Built-in kitchens also mean that the countertops can run unbroken along the entire spread of the base cabinets (except for intentional breaks like for sinks).
Q: The cabinet series is sometimes called AKURUM/RATIONELL. What is RATIONELL?
RATIONELL is the series of interior components--cutlery trays, carousels, etc.--that are made to fit with the AKURUM series of cabinets. At this point, you don't need to decide on RATIONELL components.
2. VÄRDE
The VÄRDE cabinet system differs from AKURUM in two main ways: 1.) It has exposed legs; 2.) The bases are advertised as freestanding and movable. The exposed legs give these kitchen cabinets more of an airy feel, and also make it feel more like a chef's kitchen, a commercial kitchen (exposed legs also mean you need to clean underneath the cabinets).VÄRDE kitchen cabinets are theoretically moveable, but any VÄRDE holding a stove, cooktop, sink, or anything related to plumbing or electrical is no more movable than a built-in piece. The only difference is that, with VÄRDE, you do not have continuous countertop running from base to base.
Q: What is the free-standing UDDEN series?
UDDEN is still referred to in the IKEA Home Planner. It is a free-standing kitchen cabinet series available only in the European market. It appears to have been discontinued in U.S. around 2006-7.
