When you're working at the sink or standing at the countertop, your toes are likely slightly under the cabinets in the little recess at the floor called a kick board or a toe kick. Standard toe kick recesses measure 4 inches high and 3 inches deep. Cabinets installed with structural toe kicks in place need only finishing with a cosmetic plate. Cabinets without existing kick board are routinely finished with a single piece of three-quarter-inch-thick hardwood to match the cabinets.
Things You'll Need
Clear finish
180-grit sandpaper
Pin nailer
1½-inch finish nails
1-inch finish nails
Putty crayon
- 1
Measure the height of the recessed area below the cabinets. Measure the length of the cabinet along the base. If cabinets are joined together, measure the accumulated width between corners. If there are no corners, there will be a lip at each end. Measure between the lips. Peer under the cabinets. If you can see under the cabinets, install a three-quarter-inch structural kick board. If you can't see under them install a quarter-inch overlay kick board.
- 2
Cut a piece of 3/4-by-4-inch-wide hardwood for a structural kick board. Cut a piece of 1/4-by-4-inch-wide hardwood for an overlay kick board. Cut either of the boards to width if needed with a table saw. Cut either of them to length with a miter saw. Sand the boards smooth with 100-grit sandpaper. Blunt the corners and edges.

- 3
Finish the boards of either type by wiping them with stain to match existing cabinets using a cotton cloth. When the stain is dry, spray the board with a single coat of clear finish. When the finish is dry, sand the board lightly with 180-grit sandpaper. Apply a second coat of finish and allow it to dry.
- 4
Place the three-quarter-inch hardwood under the cabinets, between the lips or corners to install the structural kick board. Tap it flush to the cabinet jambs using a rubber mallet. The cabinet jambs are the vertical sides of the cabinets.
- 5
Place the quarter-inch hardwood under the cabinets, between the lips or corners to install the overlay kick board. The overlay fits flat against the existing kick board.
- 6
Shoot two 1½-inch pin nails, evenly spaced, through the face of the quarter-inch kick board to attach it to each one of the cabinet jambs. Shoot two 1-inch pin nails evenly spaced vertically, 8 inches apart, to fasten the overlay kick board to the existing kick board.
- 7
Fill the nail holes with a matching-color putty crayon. Wipe off the crayon residue with a soft cloth.
