White laminate cabinets in the kitchen may be nothing special to look at, but they do provide much-needed storage space and are ripe for upgrading. Rather than replacing those outdated cabinets, revamp them. Laminate cabinets can be painted, but they need a thorough cleaning and priming with a primer designed for slick surfaces; otherwise, the paint won't adhere properly.
Help for Hardware
Even without altering the cabinets themselves, replacing or revamping the hardware gives those laminate cabinets a fresh look. Swap old hardware out for new hardware that matches the finish of the majority of the appliances or the kitchen sink fixtures, such as a platinum or brushed stainless-steel with sleek styling. If the physical shape of the existing hardware is somewhat pleasing but the finish is not, sand the pieces and repaint them. Spray paint in your choice of metallic finish modernizes even plastic or wood drawer pulls; choose a paint designed for the composition of the hardware, such a plastic paint for plastics, or metal paint for metal hinges and drawer pulls.
Perked Up With Paint
Chalkboard paint applied to several cabinet door fronts or the side of a high cabinet provides a place to leave notes or to prepare a grocery list; this paint is available in shades other than black. Modernize cabinet doors and drawer fronts with a chevron pattern.
Decor With Dimension
Laminate cabinets with a basic boxy shape benefit from dimensional embellishments such as molding around the door faces and cabinet tops, or faux tin ceiling tiles for texture. Cut moldings to size for the tops of all cabinets, securing them with construction adhesive, or use thin trim strips to add details to the door fronts. Thin metal sheets imprinted with texture similar to thin ceiling tiles can be secured with construction adhesive or nails. Paint the textured material as desired to match the kitchen decor.
Doors of Perception
Replacing or completely removing the cabinet door fronts gives the cabinets a completely new look. Craft a small frame of wood as a cabinet door frame, tacking a patterned, cheery fabric to the back. Swap solid doors for windowed door panels, allowing cabinet contents to be visible. Completely remove the doors, filling in the hardware holes with wood putty, painting over the cabinet and filler to mask the former holes. Thin rope lighting or small under-cabinet lights installed within the cabinet provide ambient lighting. To brighten up and add a fresh look inside the cabinets, adhere colorful or patterned contact paper, fabric or wallpaper to the back inside wall of each open or glass-fronted cabinet.
