Cabinet Refacing Cost - About

Updated December 12, 2014.

As long as the basic cabinet structure is fine,

kitchen cabinet refacing is a completely legitimate way to pare down kitchen remodeling costs. While the typical method of dealing with cabinet problems is to demo-and-replace, this can become prohibitively expensive. Demolition and waste removal costs easily run into the low thousands, with new kitchen cabinets and installation far exceeding five figures.

But how much money can you save? We consulted with Christie Mawer of Kitchen Magic. Christie was kind enough to give us this assessment of cabinet refacing costs.

We do cabinet refacing. Most people aren't aware of this option for their kitchen. Our materials are supplied by NuBold which has been in business for nearly 30 years and makes high quality 3/4" thermofoil, polyester and wood doors.

It is for people who: like the basic layout of their kitchen; want to have a new look (and possibly a few changes); want to spend less money; want to have less disruption in their lives; want to make less environmental impact.

What we do is:

  • Replace the doors and drawer fronts with new custom made fronts (combining all styles, colors and materials there are about 600 choices)
  • Skin the frames and faces of the cabinets with matching laminate
  • New hinges
  • New handles
  • Additions such as crown molding, glass, custom pot drawers, countertops and adjustments to the layout or additional pieces such an island or pantry are also available
The timeline for this job is a few days instead of several weeks to completion (after the materials arrive, of course).

To the direct question you asked - it costs about 40-50% less than a full kitchen. So an average size full kitchen generally costs $12,000-$20,000 while a refaced kitchen of the same size is usually $7,000-$10,000.
