We have had an Ikea kitchen for about 7 years now - with solid beech doors under the benchtops and metal framed glass over the counters. With a household of 7, including teenagers that are incapable of closing an under-benchtop door or drawer without using their feet, I must say that the cabinets are still in fine shape, inside and out.

About a year ago we got a bathroom vanity unit from Ikea - same stuff as the kitchen cupboards, with a porcelain sink fitted on top. Even in such a high moisture area, the MDF has so far shown no signs of swelling - despite the efforts of two small dolphins who bathe in that bathroom every night.

I didn't think the Ikea kitchen would last as well as it has - would probably go for it again, if I were remodeling, and use the savings on the cabinetry to splurge on granite countertops or appliances.

But don't use their plastic knobs - we bought our own and I think they work better than the plastic ones. We had plastic ones on a chest of drawers that fell apart in days.
