A kitchen floor plan specifies the top view, also known as plan view, of a kitchen. This view shows only the width and length of the kitchen and the items in it. Front elevation views show only the kitchen's height and width. Side elevation views show the kitchen's height and depth. Used together, plan and elevation views describe a kitchen's layout. Drawing these views can reveal ideas for improving the way your kitchen uses its available space. For example, you may discover that your sink and refrigerator are placed too far apart for efficient food preparation.

Use a measuring tape to measure the dimensions of your kitchen, then write the dimensions on paper.

    • 2

Draw on graph paper a rectangle proportioned the same as the dimensions you measured in the previous step. For example, if your kitchen measures 10 by 20 feet, you could draw a rectangle measuring 10 by 20 inches or centimeters. The rectangle represents the kitchen's exterior walls.

    • 3

Repeat the previous two steps to measure your refrigerator and draw its plan view within the kitchen rectangle. Use the same scale factor that you used for the kitchen's walls, and use the refrigerator's width and depth, not its height, for the scale calculation. Label the rectangle "refrigerator."

    • 4

Draw and label the rectangles for the plan views of the other items in the kitchen using the instructions from the previous three steps. This step completes the kitchen's plan view.

    • 5

Calculate the width-to-height proportion of the refrigerator using the dimensions you recorded in Step 3. For example, if your refrigerator measures 30 inches wide by 60 inches high, the proportion is 1 to 2.

    • 6

Calculate the height of the refrigerator's front view by multiplying the width of the refrigerator's plan view rectangle by Step 5's figure. For example, if you draw the refrigerator's plan view as 2 inches long and your width to height proportion is 1 to 2, the height of the refrigerator's front view would be 2 times 2, or 4 inches.

    • 7

Draw a rectangle representing the refrigerator's front view on a new piece of paper. Make the front rectangle's width the same as the plan view's width, and its height the figure you calculated in the previous step.

    • 8

Repeat the previous three steps for the other items in the kitchen to complete the front view. Ensure that the bottom edges of all items line up. Doing so places all items on the same ground plane.
