Traditional oak cabinets provide a durable cabinetry option that lasts a lifetime when cared for properly. To keep the cabinets looking their best, clean the oak regularly with mild ingredients that remove buildup but don't damage the wood or leave behind no residue. Instead of purchasing expensive cleaning supplies from your supermarket or home improvement store, make your own cleaner.

Dust the cabinets regularly, and wipe down the interior of the cabinets as well. Use a vacuum hose attachment when debris, crumbs and other residue is present.

Wipe down the cabinets with a damp cloth. Add a few drops of dish soap to the cloth when plain water is not enough to clean the oak.

Rinse the cloth out and rub over the oak again to remove any remaining soapy residue. Let the oak air dry.

Moisten a clean rag with oil soap and rub it into the oak, rubbing with the direction of the wood grain. Allow to air dry. Using the oil soap will restore the like-new appearance of the cabinets and should be done every few months, or as needed.
