Of course, it's going to depend upon the 'mood' of your home. Ours is a very casual log cabin...with many natural woods throughout...cedar, cyprus, pine...
So I had to pick a wood that would blend well with all of them.
And found the hickory to be the best solution. As you can see in the picture, the variation in wood grain can lend itself from semi-formal to casual.
Here's a pic of the hickory cabinets the we have...it's one of the hardest woods that I've used. Six years of people, pets and parties and not one single ding or dent. Looking just as great as the day they were installed <:O)
