Replacing existing kitchen cabinets is an expensive renovation. Instead, many homeowners opt to update their existing cabinets. Painting the cabinets can completely transform the look of a kitchen. In order to paint kitchen cabinets, the doors and hardware need to be completely removed. However, another way to update painted cabinets without removing the hinges and the doors is to use a faux painting technique called glazing. Glazing kitchen cabinets gives them an old-fashioned, antique look. Covering the hinges with glaze also makes them appear aged and can actually help the overall effect.
How Glazing Works
Glazing is also known as antiquing or color washing. The technique works by mixing the paint color with glaze, which thins the paint, making it more translucent. The glaze may appear milky white in the can, however it dries clear. The glaze and paint can be mixed in equal parts. Add more paint and the finish comes out darker. With more glaze, the finish is lighter. Once the paint and glaze are mixed, the mixture is applied with a brush and wiped off with a clean rag. Its best to follow the grain of the wood. The color deposits heavier in grooves and depressions, creating an aged look to the wood. Raised or recessed door panels work the best with this technique, which can be used on walls and furniture as well.
Glazing with Stain
Kitchen cabinets can also be antiqued using a dark wood stain. This works well on cabinets that have already been painted a lighter color such as white, cream, or pastel colors. Gel stains work well as a glaze for some applications. However, it may be necessary to add an extender to the stain in order to lengthen the open time. If you decide to try a gel stain without a thinning agent, make sure to practice on a sample board first. When the gel stain is setting up or drying too fast, making it difficult to manipulate, an extender can be added before glazing your cabinets.
Glazing with Oil-Based Paint
In general, whencabinets are painted with an oil-based paint, an oil-based glaze or a stain should be used. An oil-based paint should be mixed with a solvent in a ratio of 3 parts paint to 1 part solvent. Using a latex-based glaze over an oil-based paint it is not recommended because latex paint is likely to have adhesion problems on an oil-based surface. The paint is more likely to chip, crack and peel off.
Glazing with a Latex-Based Paint
When glazing over latex-based paint, you can create a glaze by mixing 4 parts water to 1 part latex or acrylic paint. The advantage of using latex or acrylic paint is a much faster drying time and fewer fumes, if any. However, because latex and acrylic glazes tend to dry so much quicker, it may be necessary to work the glaze over smaller areas. You can also add an extender to a latex glaze or find one that has an extended drying time.
