Considering the amount of use kitchen cabinets get in the home, the placement of kitchen cabinet hardware is important. There are several options, including placing the hardware in the lower corner of the cabinet door or in the center of the outer edge of the cabinet. Some options for kitchen cabinet hardware placement work better than others. The hardware should be placed for both convenience and appearance.
Lower Corner Cabinet Placement
One option for placing your kitchen cabinet hardware is between 2.5 and 3 inches above the lower corner of your cabinet door opposite the hinge on the door (outer edge). This location is the most common and convenient for most people. If your cabinet door has a frame that surrounds it, center the knob on the frame or the flat area of the frame.
Center Placement
Another option for placing your kitchen cabinet hardware is placing the hardware in the center of the outer edge opposite the hinge on the door. This placement places the hardware higher up on the cabinet than the lower corner placement. This placement is not ideal for people who are short or don't want to extend their arm to reach to the middle of the cabinet.
Base Cabinet Placement
For base cabinets, one option is placing your cabinet hardware between 2.5 and 3 inches down from the upper corner opposite the hinge side of the cabinet door (outer edge). Cabinet hardware can also be placed further down the base cabinet, but this may not appeal to people who don't want to reach down to open a base cabinet.
Away From the Hinge
Cabinet hardware placed further away from the hinge requires less of an effort to open the cabinet door. Knobs placed in the "dead center" of the cabinet door require a lot more effort to open the door than a knob placed on the outer edge of the cabinet.
Supplies Needed
Once you have selected where you want to place your kitchen cabinet hardware, gather the supplies you need to complete the installation project. You will need a screwdriver, a drill and bit, masking tape to mark the area on the cabinet to drill, a clean soft cloth for wiping off any dust after drilling, and the cabinet hardware itself. Make sure you measure correctly, and drill from the front, not the back, to prevent any splintering from occurring.
