It is not necessary to be an expert to learn how to put frosted glass in cabinet doors. In fact with the right tools, a little patience and perseverance this task can be accomplished quickly, easily and with professional results. Adding frosted glass to cabinet doors will increase their attractiveness and beauty, not to mention all the money saved by doing it yourself.
Step 1 - Prepare Cabinet Doors
Secure the cabinet door to a work table with c-clamps being sure to put a piece of scrap wood between the clamp and cabinet door to prevent marring it. Begin by cutting out the opening for the frosted glass by carefully measuring a 1/4 inch border around the inner cabinet facing. Using the router and a rabbeting bit, router out a 1/4 inch groove around the inner cabinet facing which will house the frosted glass piece. Using the 1/4 wide chisel, square each of the rounded corners.
Step 2 - Cut Frosted Glass
With the straight edge placed on top of the class and held tightly, carefully cut the glass to be used to size with a sharp glass cutter. Turn the glass over, and with the balled end of the glass cutter gently tap the glass along the cut seam. With careful tapping it should separate with no trouble. Dry fit the frosted glass into the opening made by the router bit to insure a tight and secure fit before applying adhesive to secure the frosted glass into place.
Step 3 - Secure Glass to Cabinet Door
Slide a tube of silicone caulking into the caulking gun after snipping off 1/8 of an inch of the caulking tube. Carefully apply a small bead of silicone, approximately 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch of caulking all around the inner edge of the grooved opening for the glass. Place the frosted pane of glass carefully on top of the silicone bead, wiping any excess with a dry cloth. Tap glazing points into place to insure that the frosted glass fits tightly and securely into the opening of the cabinet door.
Step 4 - Add Moldings
Carefully apply a small bead of silicone on top of the glass to help secure it to the cabinet door. Cut 3/8 inch strips of wood and glue them into place on top of the frosted glass. These can be mitered or butt joined at each end, framing the frosted glass into place. Be careful to remove any silicone that squeezes out quickly and carefully so that it does not mar the wood or cloud the frosted glass.
Step 5 - Clean Up
Allow the silicone caulking to dry for at least 24 hours before moving the cabinet door panels or trying to attempt to install them onto the cabinet. Use a sharp razor to remove any unwanted silicone squeeze-out from the frosted glass or cabinet doors. A careful sanding with 220 grit or higher will smooth out the finish on the wood of the doors.
