Kitchen painted in Dulux oil eggshell Wilmslow to match

This article about a hand painted kitchen in Wilmslow is from Traditional painter, Jason Walker of JS Decor. He goes through the whole process from first meeting the clients, matching units to a RAL colour and the finish result.

painted limed oak kitchenMy latest hand painted kitchen in Cheshire came from a referral from a customer in Wilmslow. I painted their limed oak kitchen for them in June of this year, and their neighbour had seen what we were doing, and asked if I could look at their kitchen.

As you can see from the picture below, their antique pine kitchen was in excellent condition, but in need of a make-over!

The brief

It was an in-frame antique pine kitchen, about 20 years old. Although a little dated, (it had an orange look to it), I explained that it could be painted. Here is a short video shot of the whole kitchen before work started.

Colour match a factory finish paint

miele kitchen cabinetTheir main concern was some modern units they had bought from Miele 3 years earlier, which had a painted finish. They wondered if I could paint the pine to match these new off-white units.

All we needed to do to find the exact off-white colour was to contact Miele with a few details. They told us the RAL colour reference, which we can easily get mixed in Dulux oil based eggshell.

They accepted the quote, I booked it in and a date was set. Nearer the date I called to discuss the arrangements and to choose a second cabinet colour to complement the RAL colour. By working with the colours in the room, plus the curtains, it was agreed that a neutral green would work well.

I was also asked if the general decoration work could be done at the same time. This wasnt a problem, but I suggested that we would be better off picking the wall colours when the kitchen was nearer to completion.

After 6 days working on the kitchen cabinets, we had primed with Zinsser BIN, sanded and applied 2 coats of oil based eggshell.

At this stage, we were ready to pick the wall colours, using the Dulux colour wheel. The colour wheel system that Dulux have is great for finding a colour to suit the situation. Once the colours were chosen, we set to with Dulux Diamond matt, as they liked the chalky look which at the same time is very hard wearing.
