Gel staining kitchen cabinets - YouTube

The easiest and cheapest way to update your kitchen cabinets. The process is simple but it takes some time to do since you have to let each coat dry a day before applying a second coat.

Items you will need:
TSP Trisodium Phosphate for cleaning the cabinets.
3m stripping pads (medium coarseness)
Purdy XL nylon/Polyester brush, I used a 2.0 to 2.5 inch brush.
Painters pyramids are helpful in holding up the doors off the table while staining.
Gel stain, I bought two 1 quart cans and used 1-1/2 quart.
Synthetic steel wool #000 for "lightly" scuffing in between coats.
Minwax fast drying Polyurethane Satin finish about 2 quarts.
Painters towels or a good lint free rag for applying the polyurethane.
Mineral spirits for cleaning the bushes and anything else you did not intend to stain.

Direction on how I did it.

1: Clean cabinets with TSP as I explained in the video.
2: use a medium stripping pad to scuff up the cabinets and then clean dust off.
3: apply gel stain with the purdy XL brush, at least two coats.
4: Lightly scuff between gel stain coats and before poly coat with synthetic #000 steel wool, careful not to scuff gel stain off especially on edges, then clean any dust off. Let gel stain dry 24hrs between coats.
5: Apply minwax fast drying poly with a lint free rag or towel at least two coats.
6: Lightly scuff in between poly coats except last coat of coarse. Let poly dry at least 4 hours before scuffing with synthetic steel wool.

If you do get a few air bubbles in the poly when you're applying it, just blow quick bursts of air on the bubbles and they'll go away.
