Cabinet Door Styles - About - Home Renovations, Remodeling

When you boil it down, there are two main styles of stock and semi-custom* cabinet doors for kitchen and bathroom: flat panel and raised panel.

Beyond that, you've got variations of the same. Shaker is a type of flat panel, and so is slab. Then those can be mixed up in various ways, too: Shaker can have beadboard in the middle. Or it can have a stile down the middle, for the Side-By-Side look.

Or you can make an even grander departure and go for an Accent Door, which can incorporate glass, metal, paint, or anything else your heart desires.

1. Flat Panel

Flat panel cabinets begin with a single base of wood and remain that way or are built up. To illustrate, they remain completely flat, as in the Slab Style listed below, or pieces are built onto it, as in the Shaker Style.
  • Used in kitchens or bathrooms for a contemporary or early 20th century feeling.

2. Raised Panel

Raised panel cabinets are made of an outer frame and an inner panel, both on the same plane. The distinctive grooving (which produces the popular Arch Style cabinet door) is routed into the wood.
  • Frame and panel can slightly move, allowing for expansion and contraction.
  • Raised panel doors tend to be the most structurally stable of all doors.

3. Slab

A type of flat panel door, slab cabinets are as monolithic as you can get: 90 degree angles (or a slight round) on all edges, no embellishment.
  • Used to convey a sleek, modern Euro look or one of stark utilitarianism.
  • While reputed to warp over time, most modern slab cabinets should not experience this.

4. Shaker

One of the most popular styles of flat panel cabinet doors, Shaker-style doors are like slab-style, but with a "picture frame" around the perimeter.
  • Numerous variations of Shaker are possible. One variation seen often is Shaker Beaded, where beadboard is placed within the "picture frame."
  • This style approximates the austere, simple style of furniture built by the Shaker community.

5. Mullion or Side-By-Side Shaker

This Shaker variation either runs a vertical strip of wood (stile) down the center for a Side-By-Side style or a cross-shaped pattern for the Mullion Style, pictured here.
  • If an entire kitchen's worth of Shaker cabinets seems monotonous, you can add a few Side-By-Side cabinet doors.
  • The Mullion Style is reflective of older style double-hung windows.

6. Arched or Eyebrow Panel

A Raised or Flat Panel door with an inner groove, the top part of the groove being a smooth semi-circle.
  • The most popular type of raised panel door.
  • Can have an arch either at top or both top and bottom.

7. Cathedral

A variation of the Arched/Eyebrow door in which the groove flattens out as it reaches its two end points.
  • Gives the room a slightly showier look than the plain Arched/Eyebrow door.
  • Can have an arch either at top or at top/bottom.

8. Accent

Just like an accent wall , an accent cabinet door is employed for maximum visual effect, but sparingly. "Accent Door" is a broad, catch-all term to describe not just anything out of the ordinary, but a door that uses materials other than wood.
  • Frosted glass cabinet doors are popular because they show hazy outlines of the cabinet contents without giving away too many unwanted details (like the store-brand olive oil that you try to pass off as the ultra-fancy Lambda oil!).
* = This article is limited to stock and semi-custom cabinets, because virtually any kind of cabinet is possible if you order custom.
