During kitchen or bath remodeling, cabinets usually take up a large part of the budget whether you do them yourself or have them installed by a professional. Professionals estimate and price cabinets in linear feet, which are actually the same as regular 12-inch feet. Measure your current cabinets for replacements, or the walls where you will place new cabinets, to determine what you need. This helps to estimate costs, as contractors and cabinet manufacturers charge by the linear foot. The measurements can be done in a few minutes and require no complicated math.

    • 1

Draw a basic sketch of the floor cabinet and appliance placement in your room on a sheet of paper, using a pencil. Use an extra sheet of paper to sketch out the placement of upper cabinets.

    • 2

Measure the length of each section of cabinets with a tape measure in inches, stopping where each section stops at an appliance or empty space. Measure upper cabinets separately from the lower cabinets, even if they are along the same wall.

    • 3

Write each measurement down on your sketch, marking the number of inches along the corresponding area of the drawing.

    • 4

Add all of the measurements together with a calculator. Divide the total by 12 to find the total number of linear feet.
